How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional Paint Job

A little preparation before your painter arrives goes a long way. Here's exactly what to do — and what not to worry about — before your painting project begins.

You've booked your painting project, you've chosen your colors, and your painter is scheduled to arrive next week. Now what? A little preparation on your end can make the whole process smoother, faster, and less stressful for everyone involved. Here's exactly what we recommend to our customers across Bucks County and Montgomery County before we show up.

Interior Painting Prep: What You Should Do

The biggest thing you can do before an interior painting project is clear the space. You don't need to empty the room completely — we bring drop cloths and can move furniture — but the more you can do ahead of time, the faster we can get started. Here's a practical checklist:

  • Remove small items, decorations, and anything fragile from the room
  • Take down curtains, blinds, and window treatments if possible
  • Remove outlet covers and switch plates (or we can do this)
  • Clear off shelves and bookcases near walls being painted
  • Move small furniture to the center of the room or another space
  • Communicate any specific concerns or areas that need extra attention

What We Handle — So You Don't Have To

A lot of homeowners stress about prep work that's actually our job. Surface preparation is one of the most important parts of a quality paint job, and it's something we take seriously on every project. Here's what we handle:

  • Filling nail holes, cracks, and minor surface imperfections
  • Sanding rough areas and feathering repairs for a smooth finish
  • Applying primer where needed for proper adhesion
  • Taping off trim, ceilings, and adjacent surfaces
  • Laying drop cloths to protect floors and furniture
  • Cleaning surfaces to remove dust, grease, and contaminants

Exterior Painting Prep: Your Role

For exterior projects, your prep work is a bit different. The main thing is making sure we have clear access to all areas of your home's exterior. Here's what helps:

  • Trim back bushes, shrubs, and plants that are close to the house
  • Move outdoor furniture, grills, and decorations away from the work area
  • Secure or remove any outdoor lighting or fixtures that might be in the way
  • Let us know about any areas of concern — soft wood, previous repairs, etc.
  • Make sure we have access to an outdoor water source and electrical outlet
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area during the project

The Day Before: A Few Final Things

The day before your project starts, do a quick walkthrough and make sure the space is ready. For interior projects, make sure the room is accessible and the temperature is comfortable — we need the space to be at least 55°F for proper paint application and curing. For exterior projects, check the weather forecast. If rain is expected, we'll be in touch to discuss rescheduling if needed.

Also, don't feel like you need to be home the entire time. Many of our customers in Doylestown, Warminster, and Lansdale go about their normal day while we work. We're professional, respectful of your space, and we'll communicate with you throughout the project. If you have questions or concerns at any point, just reach out.

After the Project: What to Expect

Once the project is complete, we do a thorough walkthrough with you to make sure everything meets your expectations. We'll point out any areas that need touch-ups and take care of them before we leave. We also clean up completely — no paint drips, no tape residue, no mess left behind. Your home should look better than when we arrived, not just painted.
